Furnace of Affliction

‘Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.’ (Isaiah 48:10-11)

In the darkest of moments
Where the vanity of the creature is exposed,
There,
The sorely chafed heart grieves.

Out of the depths have I cried
Unto Thee, O LORD.
It is a comfort to
Those who are in depression
That it is not unusual for Thy servants
To pass through such depths.
For it is Thy mercy unto me,
Thy mercy that weans me from the world
Unto Thyself.

LORD, for a burning love towards Thee
And an unshakeable trust upon Thee
I plead.
Let nothing else matter,
No – not the opinions of man
Nor the want of earthly goods.
Let them fade into insignificance
As I turn my eyes upon Jesus.

Rid me of lukewarmness,
Rid me of double-mindedness,
But help me, O Spirit,
Effect a full, entire consecration
That I may give myself
Clean away to Christ!
