I Told You So

Rubbing salt into the wound
Is inflicting needless hurt –
Even if she fell due to her own
Carelessness and negligence.

Being kind and dressing the wound
Might be a better help to give –
Than standing around saying, I told you so,
Who asked you to walk there,
Who warned you against it?

So she sits there,
Paralysed in pain,
Not wanting to
Stand up again.

And then she remembers
The many others who were
And sincere:

Most of all, her God,
Who cares
Most tenderly and gently:

Though salt stings her wound,
And tears sting her eyes,
And walk with her head held high,
Made wiser through the fall,
Made stronger through it all.
